Hello,

Balanced Scorecard is an excellent Tool for Translating Strategy to Execution. To carry out the strategy the organization should be aligned

To align the organization and the strategy we use a matrix. I defined this type of matrix in my thesis in 1988. I did not think of using it then.

This matrix makes it possible to evaluate the level of alignment. Alignment between:

-> Actions of progress - Initiatives - Objectives (financial & Customer) ;

-> Incentives - Objective of employees - Objectives (drivers and/or impact) ;

-> Drivers Objectives (Internal processes & L&G) - Business processes - Impact Objectives (Finance & Customer)

-> Investments - Objectives

-> ....

The how do we know we are selecting the right initiatives to drive our strategy ? Do we even have visibility into all the initiatives ? Are we getting the necessary benefits from the initiatives ?

I send document to moderator

I look forward to more discussion on this topic within this forum.

Hi patrick

I think you have tackled one of the highly abstract areas in the implementation of the balanced scorecard. We have recently implemented the balanced scorecard suite from corporater but it is always a struggle to link actions to scorecard objectives. I would be keen to peruse your presentation and add my comments. Can you please email the matrix to krishna68@gmail.com

Dear Dr. Jaulent,

We are working on a strategy right now and we are interested in putting together a scorecard or dashboard that includes the strategy initiatives with ways of showing progress and measurement.

Please email me your spreadsheet and presentation so that I may review and give you feedback.

Thanks,

Randy

Dear Mr Patrick,
I work for a consulting company and we are helping one of our client to better link strategic initiatives with his own strategy. I would be very glad to receive your matrix (my e-mail account is: i.tovaglieri@gebconsulting.it) and send feedbacks if they may help.

Dear Patrick,
thank you for the matrix. We went through the structure you propose and it seems that it may help us checking the alignment between various dimensions. Nevertheless, we are not sure to have properly understood the scheme measuring the alignment "Drivers - KPI - Business processes - Outcome". It seems to us that the same KPI (ex. KPI 3) can be used to measure/evaluate 3 different objectives (1 in the Internal Perspective, 1 in the Customer Perspective and the third in the Financial Perspective): how can it be? In our experience a KPI can be useful to evalutate one (max 2) objectives. Did we miss something?

Thank you very much
Ileana

Ileana

It is possible with the matrix to have 1, 2, 3,.. by objective. Several uses of the matrix are possible.

Example,

1. To identify the "level of quality" of the KPI to measure the objective (alignment of the KPI on the objective).

2. To identify the processes/project which carry to it (them) KPI,

3. To identify the level of contribution of the processes - projects to the outcomes.

You can also have, a KPI and 1, 2, 3, targets - the same KPI to evaluate n objectives (?)

Can you give me an example so that I build the matrix.

Regards

All,

Successful approaches to initiative planning and management reinforce the five principles of the Strategy-Focused Organization.

1. Executives must first define a manageable number of strategic initiatives by which to chart the future course of the enterprise.

2. Along with its strategy map, the organization needs an initiative planning and management methodology.

3. Employees play a role in executing initiatives, and the organization must delineate for them their initiative-execution duties and how these differ from their "day jobs."

4. The organization recognizes and rewards team and individual contributions to its successes through its employee performance management system.

5. In strategy execution, a key role for executives is managing and optimizing the initiative portfolio. (Govern to Make Strategy a Continuous Process)

Patrick,

Thank you for sharing the very innovative document. The process will certainly help to ensure align initiatives and actions to the strategic themes and objectives. The two way tables are a novel idea, but a three way table gets a little complicated.

Thank you for these compliments. The matrix can be used for various ways. You can, for example, to use the matrix to make the cascading.

Corporate BSC -- cascading to -- RH Cascading or IT Cascading or BU cascadinng

I can send an example to you.
