SFO - Recent Researh

BSCC conducted recently research among its on line members to identify the impact of SFO practices on actual performance.

Statistical analysis showed that the organizations that reported to have achieved breakthrough results (mean year increase in revenues of 24%) differed vis a vis the organizations that reported to have achieved merely operational or organizational benefits (mean year increase in revenues of 13%) in only a few SFO practices:

1. Strategic priorities repeatedly communicated via multiple media
2. Compensation and incentive system linked to strategic performance
3. Personal development plans aligned to the achievement of strategic results
4. Process management programs linked to strategy
5. Knowledge management processes enable learning and best practice sharing

On the other hand, the three groups ("breakthrough", "operational improvements", "organizational improvements") were found to be statistically similar in the level of their performance concerning other SFO practices (e.g. mobilization, translation of strategy, alignment).
But were they really similar?

The firms that participated in the research by filling the appropriate questionnaires, reported their subjective perceptions of their performance in each SFO practice (self-assessment).

While self-assessments can be useful, we should recognize that in principle, there are --and should be-- objective performance scales relating to each competency (SFO practice).

The issue then is: Does similar subjective perceptions of performance imply similar objective performance? I.e. If A --an excellent organization-- feels that it did an "OK job" in translating strategy and B --a mediocre organization-- feels the same about itself, can we jumb to the conclusion that their objective performance was indeed similar? I.e. that both A and B did in fact an equally good job in translating strategy?

If not, what are the implication for the validity of this research?

That's an interesting perspective. I've been reading an article on Ecopsychology by Theodore Roszak et al. Guilt about the abuse of the earth, lack of defining milestones and rituals (spiritual), disconnectedness from the earth all are contributing factors to fanatical behavior (not only terrorists but extreme religious movements, gangs, etc).

I more troubled with the current situation of our environment. it is continuously deteriorating and we have to move fast. I understand very less work has been done to this direction and world wide mass education is the need of the day. Can someone suggest how best we can spread the awareness.

We are a non-profit trade association financed totally by annual dues assessed from our members. Our desire is to build into our dues assessment an amount that would remain at the end of the year as surplus. We would want to accumulate such surpluses over a number of years so that in the event that some untoward event occurs that drastically reduces or eliminates our dues receips we would be able to continue operations for some period after such an event.
My question is: Does anyone know if there is a standard period of time that we should aim for the accumulated surplus to cover? e.g. 3 or 4 months of operations? Is there any best practice standard for this concept? or is this a principle that is even valid?
